We have completed our first full week of preschool! The children are settling in nicely. All of the preschoolers have been very attentive during circle and story time. They are working hard at remembering to clean up when finished with the materials. I have been super impressed with their ability to walk in the hall as a group.
This week long we have been talking about being good friends at school. I also tied in celebrating our differences, including looking different, learning differently and having different special talents. The boys and girls participated in many fun activities to help foster these ideas. Together we created a friendship poster with everyone’s handprint that matched his/her skin color. Many of the children gave suggestions of how they can be a good friend as well and I wrote their words in the center of the poster. Each child created a self portrait. We are remembering to include all the features on a person’s face. Some children included many details such as eyelashes and eyebrows! We had a great time showing each other different talents that we have by moving our bodies in silly ways.
While the nappers are sleeping in the afternoon, we have begun talking about our names and the letters that start each one. These smart kiddos sequenced the letters in their names using a model and then some tried to write their name independently. We also talked about the shapes that we use to make any uppercase letter: big line, little line, big curve and little curve. We played “wood piece pokey” and then experimented with the pieces to see what letters we could come up with. I read the book “Chicka, Chicka Boom Boom” and each student chose their initial letter for their first name and placed it on a drawing of a coconut tree.
We are a busy group and loads of fun!! 🙂
Enjoy your weekend.
