Dear Second Grade Families,

We are finished with our Pigeon stories and we have been sharing them. The children did a nice job on them especially since it was our first writing project. These stories will be coming home soon. In math, we are working on word problems using addition and subtraction. We are also practicing our math facts to get faster at them. In Social Studies, we continue to work on Economics and resources. In Science we are starting a unit on Properties of Matter. In reading we are working on main idea and details. We are also working on building our reading stamina and fluency.

Thank you.

Dear Second Grade Families,

We have had a great beginning of the year except for the humidity. I have been working hard getting to know your children. They are very smart and caring kids.

In reading, we are about to finish Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Viorst. It is a very funny book about a little girl who wants a brontosaurus for a pet. In math, we have been doing our beginning of the year assessments and reviewing math facts. In writing, we have begun our writer’s notebooks. Setting up our writer’s notebooks takes a lot of time. We have done a couple of quick writes: one about their favorite sandwich and then one about a topic of their choice. In Social Studies, we have just started talking about economics including consumers, producers, needs and wants. Science will be starting soon.

Please note: We have a snack time in the morning. Your child should be bringing a snack to eat or they can get breakfast and save it for snack.

Ice cream will be sold on Thursdays starting next week for 75 cents.

Lemonade will be sold on Fridays beginning next week. The sixth graders will be selling it at the cost of $.50 a cup. The sixth graders read The Lemonade Wars over the summer and this is a project they are doing to raise funds for The Humane Society and their class activities.
